Understanding Common Core Science Grades 6-10 Tips From an Orange County Science Tutor: Understanding Common Core Science: Grades 6-10 Tips From an Orange County Science Tutor: Understanding Common Core Science: Grades 6-10 Southern California parents are wondering what will be expected of their children as they go through Common Core from kindergarten through 12th grade. There are many new things to learn about, and its important for parents to know if their young learner is where they need to be academically for their particular grade or age group. Considering all the information out there, its easier to learn about it if it’s broken down into smaller parts. One of the things Common Core emphasizes is English Language Arts Standards as they relate to science and technical subjects. So what exactly does this mean? Arent English and science supposed to be two separate subjects? The Common Core essentially takes the skills of critical reading and comprehension and applies them to other subjects, in this case, science. Lets take a look at some of the key skills students need to know and at what level (READ: Online Research: Whats Legit?). 1. Grades 6-8 First, students should be able to cite their source for any scientific analysis. Students should also be able to separate any prior knowledge they have about a particular technical or scientific subject from specific texts they are reading in class. They should be able to follow multiple steps when conducting a science experiment or project. These key ideas sound similar to what a English language arts student would do in English class. The same general theory is applied to other subjects. Additionally, students should be able to understand any terms or phrases that relate specifically to the subject at hand. In grade 6 through 8, students will be expected only to understand terms relevant to their particular age group. In addition to new vocabulary, science students will be expected to analyze the specific structure that an author uses in a science-specific text. Further, students are expected to understand the authors purpose for their particular  piece of writing (READ: Tips from an Irvine English tutor: decoding literature). This is a lot for students to learn already, and to be successful they will have to have skills in both the written language and science itself. In addition to the aforementioned qualities, students will be expected to integrate their knowledge and ideas. Specifically, students will need to integrate information in written text and apply it to visual text (charts, graphs, etc). Also important is the ability for students to distinguish between stated fact, reasonable opinion, and conjecture. Moreover, students will be expected to compare and contrast information from any number of sources. 2. Grades 9-10 Once students have mastered science and technical subjects at the middle school level, they will need to adjust their capabilities to meet the demands high school. In addition to skills developed to proficiency by the end of 8th grade, students in 9th and 10th grade will be expected to achieved the following. A Attend to specific details of explanations of cited texts. B-  Figure out the central idea of a text and provide an accurate summary of that text. C- Pay attention to special cases and deviations from a multiple step scientific procedure or experiment. D- Learn science-specific vocabulary at the 9th and 10th grade levels. E-   Be able to determine and notate when previous experiments differ or contrast from current experiments. If some of this information seems complicated or overly difficult, youre not alone. The Common Core expects a lot of our students and it can feel overwhelming to both students themselves and their families who are trying to help. In addition to following any updates and changes in education news, its a good idea for students to locate the appropriate support while they’re still doing well in the classroom. If vegetables arent your cup of tea, you can always switch them out for pita chips or your favorite crackers for a change of pace. 2. Fruit Fruit can be pretty inexpensive and easy to prepare for a healthy office snack. Try something like a fruit salad as a combination of your favorite fruit or seasonal fruit as your office snack. Fruit can also pair well with almond butter to make the snack more filling try apples or bananas with your favorite nut butter smeared on top. Foreshadowing my way to Japan By  Christen McGregorIt was the summer of 2005 and two of my closest friends, Walter and Chris, were to leave for Japan for two weeks. The three of us thought it would be devastating - how could we be apart for two weeks? I didn’t know then that what followed after those two weeks would change my path throughout college, and beyond.I remember the days shortly after their return being filled with stories of visiting Lake Biwa, eating okonomiyaki (a type of Japanese pancake), and a strange encounter with police because of mistaken identity. It didn’t take long for me to become enthralled with Japan through their stories.What resulted from their trip were many late nights at Starbucks reading and discussing Confucius Lives Next Door, an amazing book written about the culture of Japan â€" from taking your shoes off upon entering a house to the moral ramifications if a Japanese person decides to steal. It was captivating and I wanted to learn more. I was to start college that fall and decided to take a path similar to that of my two best friends. I enrolled in a Japanese language course and a Japanese history course. This was only the beginning.That was seven years ago. Today I live in Shiga Prefecture, the same prefecture that houses Lake Biwa, the lake that my friends visited on their first journey. For 1.5 years I taught in Junior High. It was challenging at times, but very rewarding. I ate lunch every day with my students, a group of boys in particular I’m close with and even now try to attend most of their basketball games. Teaching itself can be difficult, especially in the extreme heat of summer and dire cold of winter but the students and faculty make the experience worth it.Living in Japan can be rough. I’m not going to sugarcoat it and say that it’s all cute anime and Pokémon battles every day. I have dealt with obtaining a driver’s license, moving apartments, and going to doctor appointments on my own. The language barrier can be exhausting a t times, but I can see that everyone I interact with at least appreciates I’m trying to communicate with them. Becoming active in your city or a small community will make you feel like a true member of Japan’s society. These substances are found in nature and can be produced artificially by means of catalysts. The first and oldest type of salt is magnesia.Magnesia is a product of mining. Zeolite is formed by the chemical reaction of metals with oxygen, and is the most common form of glass that is used in roofing.Zeolite is also used in the field of medical science. It is a highly sought after compound in the field of cancer research, because it acts as a prophylactic against many cancerous diseases. Aqueous form of zeolite is also used in dental and orthodontic equipment, and in the treatment of diseases caused by calcium and sodium deposits in the bone and teeth.Aqueous salt is used for many purposes, such as cleaning, as an antibacterial agent, as a dry ingredient, as a lubricant, and as a cleaning agent. Some of the salts, particularly those that contain oxygen, are used to make magnets. Several of the salts are used in the manufacturing of fuels and in the processing of raw materials such as chemicals.
